The Art of Leadership
Much of what is written about leadership focuses on the theoretical approach that contemplates how to become an effective leader, sort of a “do’s and don’ts of leadership.” Although this theoretical perspective holds merit, we believe that successful leadership is more of an art than a perfect science. Our research reveals that the art of leadership can be crafted and honed if one pays particular attention to the following set of core values: honesty, integrity, efficient decision-making, passion for one’s work, cultural awareness, openness to learning, the ability to focus, and the willingness to trust others and share credit.
In this blog series, we will present summaries from four recent interviews with successful leaders. The interviews were designed to explore Goleman’s “The Focused Leader” (Harvard Business Review, December, 2013). We hope that in reading them, you learn something new about the art of leadership.
Dr. DeRay Cole, North Carolina Advanced Manufacturing Alliance, Project Director
FOCUS ON BUSINESS AND YOUR PRODUCT
Dr. Cole has a strong background as a leader in industry and business. He began his leadership role by viewing the TAA project as a “new business start-up opportunity,” and he has continued this approach by focusing his leadership methods on the product as well as building relationships with stakeholders and clients. By seeing the TAA project as a startup opportunity, he recognized the value of keeping others focused on the product and moving forward.
HAVE PASSION FOR THE MISSION AND THE PRODUCT
In addition to his new business start-up approach, Dr. Cole also stressed the value of being enthusiastic about the product. Passionate about helping the unemployed and displaced workers, he understands how valuable such assistance is for the individual and for the overall public good.
KNOW THE CULTURE AND FOCUS ON OTHERS
Dr. Cole clearly understands and recognizes the value of knowing the culture and recognizing the needs, issues, and challenges of others. Don’t assume that you know everything. Seek out others and learn about their organizational culture, their aspirations, and their challenges.
STAY GREEN
Dr. Cole made particular reference to “staying green.” Within this concept, he discussed the value of continuous learning. Staying green also includes staying fluid and recognizing that you don’t know everything.
BE A RAINMAKER AND NURTURE CHANGE AND GROWTH
Dr. Cole stressed the importance of being a “rainmaker,” although he had a bit of a different take on the rainmaker concept. He sees himself as a rainmaker because, like rain, he wants to be a catalyst for change, nurturing growth and progress.
